Eat and be Merry!

by Studio 511 from San Francisco, Ca on 2009-11-02
This is a really great follow up to the first book, Le Petit Appetit cookbook. As your children get older their tastes change and the way you cook and prepare food for them changes too. This cookbook makes it easy to transition your child to try new foods and get them involved in the process. The first 6 chapters go into detail about buying Organic, instilling good eating habits, and what foods could potentially be harmful to you child. It also has these really useful icons for each recipe that quickly lets you know if it's egg free, nut free, good to cook with your kids and so on. It's easy to use, has many tasty recipes and gets your kids involved in the kitchen. If only it would teach them to clean up after themselves too, then it would have everything! Also, this book and her first book, The Petite Appetit cookbook: Easy, organic recipes to nurture your baby and toddler are perfect new mom or baby shower gifts.

I don't think so

by lynetta from on 2009-10-28
I have to say that I haven't tried the recipes yet but I don't think I will be doing that any time soon. First, I have a 4 year old and I don't think she would eat many foods from the book. There are many ingrediants to most recipes that seem to be easier to buy. Such as recipes for pretzels, breadsticks, pizza dough, granola bars etc, rice milk. don't people usually just buy those ingrediants??? as it is very time consuming to bake all this first before even starting the rest? I mean, these are also made with flour, and the only reason i could see making these would be to maybe avoid gluten. Also, what is lavosh? She says to use it to make roll up sandwhiches so I can assume it's some kind of tortilla maybe. What is that... is she foreign or something? I just don't see the sense in making a lot of this when you could buy them easily it's kind of a waste of my time. The other things use alot of ingrediants and the outcome I just don't think my daughter would even enjoy. Also, a recipe for strawberry milk? Come on! I don't know about this ... if I made everything from scratch then I don't have time to spend with my girl and it usually tastes the same to me!

Great starting point for parents/child care providers

by A. K. Riley from Wisconsin on 2009-07-05
This book is full of great snack ideas, which is what I needed as I ran out of ideas after a year of family child care. Contains basic information regarding buying organics vs. conventional. Great, user friendly format. She provides nice storage tips for the recipes and nice pointers on how to include children in the kitchen as well. I really like this book and will definitely pursue her other cookbooks to add to my collection.

Healthful, tasty recipes

by D. Smith from on 2009-04-16
My family has enjoyed using the Salad People cookbook because of its healthful, easy-to-follow recipes. My oldest child is outgrowing the format of Salad People, so I thought this would be a great resource to help her become more involved in food procurement and meal preparation. I have my own versions of many of these recipes, but it is wonderful having a compendium of healthful, tasty food that our children and their friends will enjoy. While this is not a book designed for children, my second-grader enjoys reading the recipes, planning meals, and coming up with a shopping list. The recipes are all easy to follow and do not call for difficult-to-find ingredients (some of the ingredients can only be found at the health-food store, but can be substituted with more common (often non-organic) ingredients from the regular grocery store.Nutritional information on the sidebar is also a plus. The author also provides notations to let the reader know which meals can be packed easily for lunch, are dairy free, etc.

Fun and Practical

by Adrienne T. Markworth from San Francisco, CA on 2009-03-12
This book is a great follow up to The Petit Appetit Cookbook (one of my favorites)! It has a great layout and plenty of information about storage and variations (two things I consider must-haves in a good cookbook.) Two great recipes so far: French Toast fingers and Curry Chickpeas. The chickpeas are something SO simple, but I NEVER would have thought to do it. Now they've become a staple in our afternoon arsenal. Another thing I love is Lisa's writing style - her intros to the recipes make the book fun to page through even when you're not in a rush to get something on the table.

Great for the imaginative child

by Mary D. Krenke from Los Angeles, CA United States on 2010-09-02
I purchased the M&D Birthday Party B'day Cake more than a year ago for my older granddaughter's 3rd birthday. She plays with it nearly every day. I'm now considering buying it for my younger granddaughter's 3rd birthday. This is great for the child who wants to have an imaginary birthday party on any day of the year.

Enduring toy that fosters imaginative play

by E. B. Glass from Decatur, GA on 2010-08-13
My daughter is on the cusp of her fourth birthday. She received this set when she turned two. I have been surprised at how much she has enjoyed this and how much use she got out of it. It went largely ignored the first year or so she had it, then one day she got it out and has played with it nearly every day sense. My daughter loves to decorate the cake; serve pieces to me, my husband, and her friends; she even seems perfectly enamored with putting it all back together for storage! I have seen a lot of imaginative play from her with this toy. Of course she puts on little birthday parties with it, but she has also come up with some really innovative uses for the various pieces. I would say that based on my daughter's experience, 3-4 is the perfect age for this set. I have given it as a gift and will continue to give it in the future. It's just that fun and adorable!

Much loved toy

by Tracy Sawyer from Yakima, WA on 2010-07-10
The Melissa and Doug birthday cake is played with every single day at my house. I have two girls, ages 2 and 4 and they love love love this toy. They enjoy constructing the cake together, putting it in the pretend oven; singing happy birthday to each other and then serving up the cake. I wish more toys were built like this one -- a toy that promotes imagination, creativity and cooperation. We also have the pizza and ice cream cones and all three are huge hits.

My Daughter's Favorite Toy

by Sarah from on 2010-07-06
This is my daughter's favorite toy. She is 3 & her 4 year old sister and 1 year old brother all love to play with this together. We love it!

No Thanks...

by jillybug from on 2010-07-02
One of my children was given this as a birthday gift, and while the kids like it okay and do play with it some, I have a few issues with it. First, as others have mentioned, there is no lid to the box. Annoying! Secondly, the paint does come off the pieces! Of course, being "food", kiddos are going to put pieces in their mouths to pretend-eat it. (Even though I always tell them not to!) It is very obvious which pieces have been in kids' mouths, due to the paint chipping and wearing off. Even if it's lead-free, it's not a great thing to have happen! Third, there are just too many little pieces for this mom's preference and I end up finding them strewn all through the house. And finally, it's just odd to me that the two of the cake toppings are jelly beans and gumdrops. Overall, I do not like this toy and would not recommend it to others.

love the plates!

by Sarah A. Lange from san francisco on 2010-09-03
these plates are well made. My daughter loves to eat from them. The only downside that I can think of is that they are a little bit heavy for a small child to carry.

So Much Fun!!

by Katrina Bradley from Arkansas on 2010-08-27
While I have never advocated playing with your food this plate changes that!! It is so much fun to decorate for my daughter, who is 7, and she loves re-arranging her food as she eats. This is a great way to get kids to eat foods they wouldn't otherwise because they're distracted with decorating the face!! Love it and have bought more for gifts!!!

food face

by darkhorse from on 2010-07-04
The plate is heavy. It would have been a better product if a kid could easily use this item and it would have been made in a robust dishwasher friendly plastic. I would worry that it might fall off the table, if the kids get rowdy. Otherwise great idea, and it would make a nice gift for a picky eater.

Great product

by J. Halaw from Hamilton NJ on 2010-01-15
I love this item. I bought it for my daughter for Christmas and we have been having so much fun creating funny food faces! I even started a blog to post pictures of the food face plates that we made and that others have sent in [...].

Finally Received the Plates & the kids LOVE them!

by G. Sama from Wadsworth, OH USA on 2010-01-09
I ordered 9 of these plates on Sept. 25th - indeed they were a popular & hard-to-find item and when I ordered them they were on back-order. I finally received them the last week of December. I have 9 great-nieces & nephews and so far I have delivered the plates to 5 of them. They absolutely LOVE them and the parents think they are pretty cool, too - anything to encourage good eating. It would be great if they were a little bigger but work just the same at this size.

Good option-- wish they were fortified

by J. Turner from BFT, SC United States on 2010-02-20
My 11 month son likes these, and we purchased them for him. Note that as other reviewers have stated, they are very small (what do you want for 110 calories?) and, as such, intended for young children-- this would do nothing for my appetite, but they are perfect for the under-5 set as a snack. I always sample everything I give my son, and I thought these were pretty good. If your kids do not have a pre-existing sweet tooth, they will probably like these. I thought they would have the consistency of a Nutri-Grain bar, but they are a little more "dry" than that-- as a result, they create more "crumbs" than I had anticipated, but I'm more than willing to live with it, based on the fact that they are organic (do not want to feed my son Nutri-Grain bars-- too sweet, and not organic!). The PB is very thin and so there is little danger of choking.Aside from the crumbs, the only real drawback for me is that they are not fortified-- no iron, zinc, little to no vitamins, etc. I do not think it would cost the company much money to add these ingredients; I thought it was sort of standard practice to fortify children's cereal/grain products, so I'm not sure why the company decided not to.

not so tasty!

This pizza set touches MANY young hands every day at the zoo and it is still in great shape, and the children love "serving it up!"
