Helping your kids Algebra

"Mom, I can not do Algebra."

Of course you would like to help. But 'Algebra'?

It's a little out of the job description of parents is not it?

The good news is that you can help.

And you do not have to be mathematically mind, either.

All you need is a little patience, a little creativity, and be able to see the world through the eyes of his son.

Imagine which led to an Egyptian temple, which is a wall full of strange-looking hieroglyphs, and asked to translate.

So it feels like algebra to some children.

Its mission is to help your child understand why we are using hieroglyphs. And then how to use them to solve simple problems.

Here's how:

  • PHASE 1: Getting used to the language ***

Algebra uses abbreviations.

Therefore it is vital that your child is comfortable using abbreviations in everyday life.

Explain what are the abbreviations and how to use are.

For example, Frederick's name is abbreviated to Fred.

The United States is often abbreviated to the U.S. or even the U.S..

And U.S. states are also abbreviated. New York becomes New York, New Jersey, New Jersey.

Once the basic theory is understood, begin to introduce the abbreviations in the home. There are many ways to do this. Here are some ideas to get started:

Throw a party ~ ~ ~ ~

Use abbreviations to build a guest list of the guests.

Bill becomes B.

M. Marcy becomes

And if there is a Jim and John, using J1 and J2. O Ji and Jo. Or use the names of JW and JS get.

~ ~ Try cooking at home ~ ~

Teach your child how to make pancakes and give the recipe as a formula:

2e + 2f + m + s

Where: f = flour, m = milk, sugar, s =, e = eggs.

(Well, I'm not a chef, but you get the idea.)

~ Design ~ a 'healthy eating' time ~ ~

Yes, a little algebra house may even help your family eat healthier.

Create abbreviations for oranges, apples, bananas, broccoli, celery, etc.

Then plan your weekly schedule:

Mon: o + a + ba + 2br
Mar: 2ce + p + o + a
Wednesday: m + the 2nd
etc

Once your schedule is prepared, ask your child to add the many of each item you need to buy at the supermarket.

I never would have imagined a shopping list that this training could do algebra large, but it does.

When your child feels comfortable with the basic language of algebra, it is time to move to the next stage:

  • STEP 2: Solve problems ***

Much of algebra is to find an unknown value, also known as "factor x".

The best way to develop problem solving skills in children is playing simple games and puzzles.

Here are two useful games development of mind algebra.

~ ~ "Dollars & Dimes" ~ ~

The idea is to give your child formula, and say the amount of money.

So say something like:

"No more 2D i".

This means two dollars a coin ten cents more.

(Note that the 'i' of the letter has been cleverly used to represent a dime. This is because 'd' the letter has already been reserved for the dollar.)

The answer should be "Two dollars and fifteen cents."

Play this a few times different combinations of coins and bills.

You can also tell your child a lot of money, and ask them to give you the formula.

So if you say, "Four dollars and five cents," her son replies, "4d 5c more."

Ideally, the answer must be given using the least amount of coins possible. Thus, for "fifteen cents," should read "n + i" or "i + n". No "15c"!

~ ~ "Think of a number of" ~ ~

This is a classic that can play anywhere. Try that on long trips by car.

The goal is to guess the mystery number.

You say: "I thought of a number, add 3 to it, and the result is 7 What is my number? ".

Ask questions as easy as possible to begin with. As your child gains confidence, asking questions are a bit more difficult.

At some point, says he will call the mystery number 'x'. So the question in equation form.

Now do not worry. It's simple.

I guess your question is "How many more 3 17 years ago?"

Call number mystery 'x'. And so the equation is:

x + 3 = 17

Ask your child "if x plus three is seventeen, what is x? "

You can also reverse roles and ask them to give you some puzzles. Most children enjoy this. And they are taught to think more creatively about algebra too.

  • Summary ***

Only subtle changes in how your child thinks it can have profound effects on their results in math class.

Do not overload your child. Go in very small steps with lots of similar examples to give practice and confidence.

Even the smallest things can be an obstacle. As the realization that "x" means '1 X '('1' is not usually in writing).

Give lots of praise and rewards to build and strengthen the "feel good" factor.

As with any type of teaching is best to ask many questions instead of following someone saying something.

Drink plenty of hops and some time your child will experience the "Aha!" when the whole thing suddenly algebra into place.
