Great for the imaginative child

I purchased the M&D Birthday Party B'day Cake more than a year ago for my older granddaughter's 3rd birthday. She plays with it nearly every day. I'm now considering buying it for my younger granddaughter's 3rd birthday. This is great for the child who wants to have an imaginary birthday party on any day of the year.

Enduring toy that fosters imaginative play

My daughter is on the cusp of her fourth birthday. She received this set when she turned two. I have been surprised at how much she has enjoyed this and how much use she got out of it. It went largely ignored the first year or so she had it, then one day she got it out and has played with it nearly every day sense. My daughter loves to decorate the cake; serve pieces to me, my husband, and her friends; she even seems perfectly enamored with putting it all back together for storage! I have seen a lot of imaginative play from her with this toy. Of course she puts on little birthday parties with it, but she has also come up with some really innovative uses for the various pieces. I would say that based on my daughter's experience, 3-4 is the perfect age for this set. I have given it as a gift and will continue to give it in the future. It's just that fun and adorable!

Much loved toy

The Melissa and Doug birthday cake is played with every single day at my house. I have two girls, ages 2 and 4 and they love love love this toy. They enjoy constructing the cake together, putting it in the pretend oven; singing happy birthday to each other and then serving up the cake. I wish more toys were built like this one -- a toy that promotes imagination, creativity and cooperation. We also have the pizza and ice cream cones and all three are huge hits.

One of my children was given this as a birthday gift, and while the kids like it okay and do play with it some, I have a few issues with it. First, as others have mentioned, there is no lid to the box. Annoying! Secondly, the paint does come off the pieces! Of course, being "food", kiddos are going to put pieces in their mouths to pretend-eat it. (Even though I always tell them not to!) It is very obvious which pieces have been in kids' mouths, due to the paint chipping and wearing off. Even if it's lead-free, it's not a great thing to have happen! Third, there are just too many little pieces for this mom's preference and I end up finding them strewn all through the house. And finally, it's just odd to me that the two of the cake toppings are jelly beans and gumdrops. Overall, I do not like this toy and would not recommend it to others.

Great fun for kids

I bought this for my son's second birthday. Both of my kids have exceptionally large heads for their ages (both about 97th percentile) so it's almost impossible to find age-appropriate hats for them to wear (2-year-old wears hats for boys and teens). I bought this one because it has an adjustable strap for sizing. My son loved the hat and it fit him which was a huge bonus. Children who have "normal" sized heads have also worn it and because the strap adjusts, it fit them as well. It is the birthday hat for the household and whoever has the birthday gets to wear it. It's a lot of fun and the kids look forward to getting their turn. My favorite feature, other than the adjustable strap, is that you can add candles as the kids get older. The candles store inside the hat so you won't loose them. I recommend this product for a fun birthday.

Fun and useful

I searched and searched for a birthday hat for my daughter's second birthday. I didn't want a princess hat and I didn't want to get a cardboard thing that I'd just throw out. I saw this hat and thought it was a great idea. LOVE the detachable candles. They stay on surprisingly well, and there is a zippered pouch built into the inside of the hat where you can keep them--which also helped make the hat fit for my 2-year-old, since her head is so small. There is also an adjustable band around the inside of the hat. I love that she'll have this hat for at least four more birthdays and that we'll have a little tradition. The hat is well made and very sturdy, but it's soft and somewhat malleable. The only negative thing I have to say is that I wish the "Happy birthday" text part were cuter; the typeface they used is so ugly, as is the overall graphic design. But I couldn't find a hat that was cute and also had the detachable candles and the adjustability. Oh, well!

The paint job on the ducks are TERRIBLE !! There's smudged paint on every duck. Appears that the paint did not dry before they were handled.

I bought these on a lark. They are adorable. They fit in your palm. I am keeping most of them, but I have given some away too. They bring a smile to everyone. I am ordering more.
