I purchased the M&D Birthday Party B'day Cake more than a year ago for my older granddaughter's 3rd birthday. She plays with it nearly every day. I'm now considering buying it for my younger granddaughter's 3rd birthday. This is great for the child who wants to have an imaginary birthday party on any day of the year.

Enduring toy that fosters imaginative play

My daughter is on the cusp of her fourth birthday. She received this set when she turned two. I have been surprised at how much she has enjoyed this and how much use she got out of it. It went largely ignored the first year or so she had it, then one day she got it out and has played with it nearly every day sense. My daughter loves to decorate the cake; serve pieces to me, my husband, and her friends; she even seems perfectly enamored with putting it all back together for storage! I have seen a lot of imaginative play from her with this toy. Of course she puts on little birthday parties with it, but she has also come up with some really innovative uses for the various pieces. I would say that based on my daughter's experience, 3-4 is the perfect age for this set. I have given it as a gift and will continue to give it in the future. It's just that fun and adorable!

Much loved toy

The Melissa and Doug birthday cake is played with every single day at my house. I have two girls, ages 2 and 4 and they love love love this toy. They enjoy constructing the cake together, putting it in the pretend oven; singing happy birthday to each other and then serving up the cake. I wish more toys were built like this one -- a toy that promotes imagination, creativity and cooperation. We also have the pizza and ice cream cones and all three are huge hits.

One of my children was given this as a birthday gift, and while the kids like it okay and do play with it some, I have a few issues with it. First, as others have mentioned, there is no lid to the box. Annoying! Secondly, the paint does come off the pieces! Of course, being "food", kiddos are going to put pieces in their mouths to pretend-eat it. (Even though I always tell them not to!) It is very obvious which pieces have been in kids' mouths, due to the paint chipping and wearing off. Even if it's lead-free, it's not a great thing to have happen! Third, there are just too many little pieces for this mom's preference and I end up finding them strewn all through the house. And finally, it's just odd to me that the two of the cake toppings are jelly beans and gumdrops. Overall, I do not like this toy and would not recommend it to others.

I ordered this one with three others and this one came with a region limitation. I was told i would get a refund which i have not seen. I really just wanted the video playable in the USA but they did not have it in stock. I stopped ordering from the company and found another i am a lot more please with at this time.

I bought this for my 18 month old Grandson. He absolutely loves it and gets extremely excited when we he hears the opening music. It's very educational and lots of humor that even the adults will enjoy.

Wish there was more birthday scenes

Only giving it 4 stars because there is not that much birthday related scenes. I bought it because my son is obsessed with birthdays - they don't even sing the traditional Happy Birthday Song!! But my son still looooooves this DVD and entertains him greatly. Very fun DVD - even with the little birthday scenes.

Elmo is very funny. Baby loves it and I have to say that Elmo character makes some comments and jokes that only an adult would understand. I find him very entertaining compared to Barney and Tellitubies. I would pick watching Elmo anyday over the other children DVDs.

I bought this for my sons 2nd birthday party. I actually used it as a cake topper, making tracks out of frosting and setting it in them. (It was so hot that the train sank in the frosting as all of it slid off the cake... but that should be an easy fix by simply not having the party outside in 105+ heat...) My son loves trains and has loved playing with it since the party. It is very sturdy with solid construction. It is also helping him learn about magnets, as that is how the car connects to the engine. It was frustrating to him for a while that it only connects one way (if you get either turned around the magnets don't work) so that was a learning lesson. Perfect birthday gift or decoration item. Safe for young child, and very well constructed like all of the wooden railways products. Also neat that it includes stickers to put the child's name on the bottom of the car.

This is a favorite at our house! Thomas is very festive looking and the boxcar opens to reveal 'presents' inside (they are painted on and not removable so no parts to lose). You can personalize it with the included stickers which makes the birthday boy or girl feel even more special because they have a train car with their very own name on it.All the Thomas trains are a bit on the 'small' side but that is because they are made to fit into a toddler's hand. We love the magnets that keep the cars together; no more whining because the hook came out and they can't put it back in. The Thomas trains just hook back together 'like magic' with the magnets.These are wonderful, durable, very well made, QUIET toys for my noisy little boys. :-)

I love this book. I have used it for family reunion activities, children's birthday parties, and homeschool ice-breakers. The author spells it all out in steps, even to the point of telling you what to read to participants in the way of instructions. The materials needed are mostly stuff you have around the house. It's my go-to book when I need to plan activities.

Easy to use

I found this book easy to use for my high school/middle school student groups. I was able to flip through all the activities and find some that suited our needs perfectly. I didn't need anywhere near all the ideas included - just picked our favorites, and they were all big hits with the students. I really expected more from this book. I think it's a bit complicated in your organization. In addition, some exercises and challenges for the facilitator's answer is unclear. As a result there has been very helpful.

Lots of good ideas

I have worked with a small group of gifted Jr. high age students for several years and had run out of challenge ideas. This book is great! Instructions are simple and challenges are very doable for the students. I love it!
