Cake Decorating : How to ice a number shaped cake
They may be dwarf the world, cake, petit fours but are admired by all for its sophistication tasty and impressive. No wonder that the word "small" has often been damaged in "petite" when referring to these little delights. But you may wonder why the four "?" Is this how many can safely eat before getting a stomachache?
The name petit four is actually of French origin, literally translates as "little [or little] oven. "Okay, so the small part makes sense. Where does" oven "in? In 1700, the little cakes are baked brick kilns after firing everyone else has done, to make use of heat as the oven cooled. (Frugality such is the hallmark of the days past.) Moreover, the low temperature is essential for cooking these small items that did not burn. The New York Times first referred to "petits fours" in January 28.1894 (page 17), to print the special dinner menu Mr. Randolph Guggenheim. (He was a lawyer.)
Here a revelation: a petit four is not necessarily a cake. The expression is used to liberally cover any type of miniature clothing either cream pumps, almond biscuits, chocolates or cookies. However, a small square cake wrapped in a smooth and shiny or ice glaze and accented with a bit of decoration is the most widespread image of a petit four.
Some definitions I've found for petit fours ( "petits fours" is also a correct plural form) to below:
"A small cut sponge cake, etc. in any of various shapes and decorated with icing."
"A cut small square of frosted and decorated piece of pound cake or sponge cake. "
"A small luxury biscuit (cookie), cake or item confectionery. "
"A small cake of ice tea."

But my favorite is:
"Small French cakes are traditionally served after dessert.
Wait - Let me get this straight - a sweet ice cream cake that is served after dessert? Now that is my way of thinking! Well, it's all in the name of tradition. . .
Speaking of tradition, a traditional petit four is almond cake would, or Mona Lisa. These days, however, all types of flavors and fillings are used. Consider vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, pineapple, lemon, and squash, to name a few.
By now you're probably licking their lips and longing to do their own petit fours. Only a couple of things as you can know before venturing into the world of these mini marvels: Petits Fours SEC ( "SEC" means "dry" in French) concern is understandable dry items like meringues, cakes and cookie items, petit fours while Glace (French for "freezing") refer small glass cakes or pastries.
Petit fours can be done in many different forms, including squares, rectangles, diamonds, hearts, crescents, or triangles. Consider using cookie cutters to cut the cake forms. A round shape is very common, and easiest glaze and decoration. Enamels chocolate work well as they dry very nice and smooth.
How to Make Petit Fours:
1. Buy or bake a pound cake or sponge cake. You want a cake that is not too light and brittle, but take place within the framework of the slicing and plunge that follows.
2. Cut the cake into 1 ", or using special molds. Alternatively, instead of cutting the cake, many small cakes on special petit four pans.
3. Prepare a paste of powdered sugar or glaze, such as:
Glossy-Finish Ice Fondant
6 cups powdered sugar
Water 1 / 2 cup
2 T. light corn syrup
1 t. vanilla or almond extract
Combine all ingredients and stir until smooth, in a saucepan or double boiler, over low heat. This icing can be divided into smaller batches and color with food coloring.
4. (Before immersion may first want to seal in crumbs thaw at the base of each piece of butter cake with frosting, a recipe found in any standard cookbook.) Using a fork or skewer, cake sauce in ice cubes, tilt to cover all sides. Petit Fours Set in a wire cooling rack, where the role waxed or parchment is set to catch the drips. Let set. You may want to put in a refrigerator, which puts the icing quickly.
5. Place Carefully petit fours on paper backing, or arrange on a platter. Decorate to your taste! Have each petit four unique, cream butter and using a decorator bag and the tip of the hose in flower designs or little, buds, insects, animals, or messages. Or place a fresh berries on top of each, secured with a little vanilla cream.
Finally, enjoy these bite-sized, chunks of ice rich eat cake covered more than four! They offer all the pleasure of doing explode in the mouth gourmet chocolates. So remember, bigger is not always better. Petit fours are exquisitely edible proof that good things come in small packages.
